Since he started ultra running in 2012 Avery has worked hard to make a name for himself in the sport. His 2017 season being the most impressive to date. Avery won every race he entered (Georgia Death Race, Quest for the Crest 50k, Hahn's Peak Hill Climb, Continental Divide Trail Run 50k, and Grindstone 100 Miler), but one (6th place finish at Western States). UltraRunner Magazine seemed to agree that he had an impressive year, and awarded him 9th, for Ultra Runner of the Year 2017. Avery had another great year in 2018 with a HURT 100 win, setting course records at Tortola Torture 54k and Orcas Island 50-miler. He capped off his season with an impressive 11th place finish at Tor Des Geants (3rd American). In 2019 he set a course record at Quest for the Crest 50k, won Fatdog 120-miler, and finished 3rd at Trail de Bourbon (highest placing American male ever).
When he isn't training for his next race he can be found gliding through the trees on his snowboard, or breaking speed limits on his bike exploring the surrounding country roads of Silverton, CO where he calls home.
